What Shelter Pets Look Like

Pet’s Name: Gabby
Shelter Name: Bella (I loved the name, but my sister in law’s name is Ella, and that was going to get weird)
Adopted From: Humane Society of Charlotte, NC
Kill Shelter: No
Breed: Basset Hound Mix
Age at time of adoption: 2 years old
Gabby has been with us 2 years now. We had just bought a townhouse and were looking for a good size dog that would do well without much of a yard. I love all hound dogs but we were worried about getting a noisy dog. While at the kennels, one of the vets walked another dog past the row that Gabby was in. All the other dogs starting barking and baying but Gabby just watched. So we knew we had to meet that dog. We still wonder how she came to be at the shelter, she is a very well behaved dog, though very shy about new people. The only clues are that she is very nervous about getting out of a car somewhere unfamiliar, and if she loses track of us at the dog park she panics. So we’ve come to believe she was abandoned.
Our first Bassett was a learning experience she has stolen whole pans of baked goods that were cooling on the counter. Ate cat food until she made herself sick. She does get separation anxiety, and will chew on our “toys” (tv remote, dvds, cooking spoons, etc) if we aren’t paying attention to her. She has been known to growl at new guests, at which point she goes in her crate, but she eventually warms up to them.
She gets along well with our cats, loves long walks if followed by a longer nap, and playing outside with the neighbor’s dog Cooper. She thinks every afternoon text message is Cooper inviting us over for yappy hour. And though quiet most of the time, she has been startled into howling on occasion.

Pet’s Name: Athena

Shelter Name: Faye

Adopted from: San Diego Humane Society (Oceanside campus)

Kill Shelter: No

Breed: Pointer/greyhound mix

Age at time of adoption: Around 9 months

How long has this pet been a member of your family: A year and two months

Background: Unknown; most likely a stray

Shelter story: One day in late May 2011, my mom and I decided to visit the shelter to see the cats (we have two already, also adopted from SDHS). We ended up also looking at the dogs, and Athena caught my eye. Her and her kennel mate were some of the few dogs not barking, which I liked, and she was a good size, very cute, female, and relatively young. I thought to myself that if I adopted a dog then I’d get her. A few days later I talked to my dad about her, as he had previously promised I could adopt a dog. After the whole family went to interact with her, we finalized the adoption, but Athena had kennel cough and so had to stay at the shelter for an extra 10 days while she was treated with antibiotics. Every day, for those 10 days, my mom and I would go to visit her, and every time she saw also (besides one time when she was feeling her cold) she would come up to the kennel door and stand on her hind legs and lick us, and wag her tail like crazy. We were finally able to pick her up on my last day of school, so it was a very nice gift for the start of summer.

Home Life: Athena settled into our house quite easily. Our cats were upset with this intrusion, but now they get along fine with their canine sister. Athena loves to run, especially after tennis balls. She loves her chew toys, and a good belly rub. She goes crazy for squeaker toys, and will rip the squeakers from the toys. She loves to meet other dogs and gets excited when she sees them. I’m so happy that Athena is a part of my family.

Name: Allister Khat  O’Malley Nappers aka Alley Khat or mostly “Baby Kitten” even though he is a big boy now.
We chose a name that would give him the initials A.K.O.N. after our sweet Akon who left us way too soon.
Shelter Name:  none
Adopted From: Found in Laundry Mat
Breed: DSH
Age at time of adoption: About 4 months
How long has this pet been a member of your family: 8 months
Background: After taking my son, who was 2 at the time trick-or-treating I stopped by the local laundry mat at about 10 pm to wash a couple of loads of clothes since our washer was broken at the time. As soon as I entered the building I saw a movement on the table next to the door. When I turned around there was this adorable little kitten wearing a blue dress with a peace symbol outlined in flowers sitting there. It was almost like I already knew this little guy. I said to him “What are you doing here?” and he meowed his answer back to me. Now we all know that a baby kitten has no business in a laundry mat, especially late on Halloween night.  I was afraid some hoodlums might come along to do something to him that would involve one of those front load washers or dryers so I snatched him up and he went home with us. He immediately fit in with the family. Well at least the human part of the family. The baby, who is now three likes to blame everything that is broken on “Baby Kitten”, even things that were broken before either of them came along as well as anything that he notices wherever we travel. It’s always “Baby Kitten” did it. Our girl kitties were not pleased at his little intruder. His personality is so much like our beloved Akon who died a couple of years ago that we like to think he was sent to that laundry mat especially for us to find. By the way, that was the last trip we made to the laundry mat since our new washer was delivered a few days later. He is the perfect little guy and has the best manners of any kitty we have known. He actually seems more like a little house dog than a cat. He is the terror of Sodor, as he likes to play with Dalton’s trains. He loves his people and is always very happy to see us when we come home after being away for even a few minutes. And he is very happy that he no longer has to wear silly little dresses.

Name: Chloe
Shelter name: Angie
Adopted From: Taylor County Animal Shelter, KY
Kill Shelter: I think so.
Breed: Newfoundland
Age at time of adoption: around 1 1/2 years.
How long has this pet been a member of your family: 6 years
Background: We do not know why she was at the shelter.
Background: I took my 14 year old daughter and 10 year old son to “look” at the dogs a couple of days after our beloved Lab-Chow Cinjun died. We thought that our Beagle Bolton needed another brother. My son and I had our eye on am Beagle but Chloe picked my daughter so we HAD to bring her home with us. At first she was so frightened that every time that the kids would yell at each other and when my then boyfriend came over she would pee in the floor. She also does not like water. It was quite an experience the first time we tried to bathe her. She has since overcame most of her fears—it is still impossible to bathe her. She runs the show and stays very busy keeping our cats in line, and keeping up with her 3 year-old Coon Hound brother, Ruger. (Bolton the Beagle did not adjust well to life without his Cinjun and joined him at the rainbow Bridge soon after.) Chloe is very protective of my three year-old son and stays very close to him when he is outside and gets in the car when we are putting him in or taking him out of his car seat.
She doesn’t like having her picture taken—-when the camera comes out she either hides or turns her back.

I can’t get my pups to do much on these hot summer days but I’m hoping I can get all of you to submit more of your adorable shelter/rescued pet photos and stories (pretty please!).

Name: Emmit

Shelter Name: Comet

Adopted From: Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton

Kill Shelter: No

Breed: Labeled as Cattle Dog/German Shorthair

Age at time of adoption: 3 months

How long has this pet been a member of your family: almost 8 months

Background : Came from Brown County Indiana through a program that transports dogs to Massachusetts Shelters to give the overpopulated animals a better chance because of the high adoption rate in Mass.  Brown County Shelter labeled them as a stray litter estimated at 8 weeks old.

Shelter Story: Looked for months online at petfinder.com with some doubt, as most rescues require things like fenced in yards and such that i dont have. traveled to shelters around the area and was also starting to give up hope because they were either empty because of fostering, or only full of pitbulls that Im not allowed to own. heard of a shelter with a lot of dogs through a co-worker visited and it was very busy no one could help so i left. I still kept an eye online. was considering buying a german shepherd from a breeder even though i wanted to rescue one, the right timing application process and not always getting face to face time to meet the actual dog you want to maybe adopt made it seem very difficult, sometimes almost impossible at the time. I saw a picture online of his sister pop up and fell in love. but i knew that the dogs online are usually already adopted. i called just to check and had to put a reserve because they could all be adopted by the time i got there! The application went well and we picked him up the next day. his siblings all got adopted very fast as well. Im glad i kept trying to adopt and didnt buy from a breeder or petstore. he was well worth all the driving around, searching and waiting!

Home Life: He’s very trusting, smart ,and a little stubborn, has what seems to be at times an unlimited store of energy. I feed him holistic grain-free dog food but he Eats ANYTHING. we almost thought he had no taste buds he’d eat spicy things like wasabi/hot sauce, eat sour lemons and licked up the bitter apple spray! easy to please, one of his favorite treats are ice cubes probably because he knows he gets one everytime you open up the freezer ;)  he likes ripping all stuffing from his toys so we mostly play frisbee and ball. He likes to have two balls.. one for him to carry, and the other to play soccer with. Gets excited at all drive-up windows. doesnt like motorcycles or the garbage truck. hes a big baby and can be spoiled loud mouth at times if you dont give him attention. I only tought him how to bark because at first hed never show any signs he had to go outside, when he was little he never made a single peep! now he makes a good watch dog who loves to be by your side. Everyone always compliments on his beautiful coat and brindle color.

Name: Nike

Shelter: Durham Humane Society

Age at time of Adoption: Around 1 year old

How Long Has This Pet Been A Member of OUr Family: 3 days!

Background: She was a stray that got pregnant and had a miscarriage. The Humane Society performed surgery on her and we picked her up yesterday. She is not pleased with the cone she has to wear what so ever.

Shelter Story: The Humane Society called me and asked to foster her (because she needs extra attention for example: medication) and we feel in love with her, so she’s now part of the family!

Home Life: Soooo cuddly. Loves kisses and hates noise. Wraps herself in blankets and hides under the couch when the TV is too loud. She’s wonderful! :) We’ve been trying to take the cone off as much as possible since its really uncomfortable, but we have to moniter her to make sure she isn’t licking her stiches. Overall she’s a perfect match for us!

Name: Rincewind Beauchamp Wild

Shelter Name: Rinsewind

Adopted From: RSPCA Sheffield

Kill Shelter: Does not advertise as such, but is a kill shelter for long-term animals

Breed: Grey DSH (though I believe he has some Russian Blue in him due to having a double coat, his size, and his personality)

Age at time of adoption: 4

How long has this pet been a member of your family: 2 years

Background: Found in the street

Shelter Story: I’ve always wanted a cat companion, ever since I was little and would entice other cats into my garden with treats. I had just moved out of my family home, just had a job, and was wanting to get someone to love. When I saw him on the website I fell madly in love with him. Went to see him a few times at the RSPCA, where he was kept in solitary confinement due to being FIV+. He was very loud, and very loving.

Home Life: He LOVES food, which I think goes back to his days of being a stray. He’ll wake me up promptly at 7am to be fed, will be waiting for me at 5pm for some more food, and then harass me at 9pm for the third part of his meals. He is not very affectionate, but he is loving in his own way, and will follow me around the house (just not letting me pet him). Even though he is FIV+, and such a housecat, he’s not had any problems with his health, although when we got him topped up with his innocolutions in preparation of getting our second cat (Sylvia), he was under the weather for a bit.
He now is in a love-hate relationship with Sylvia, where he loves to chase her around and swat her on the head.

Name: Henry

Shelter Name: Vanderburgh Humane Society

Kill Shelter: Yes

Breed: Domestic Short Hair

Age at time of adoption: 12 weeks

How long has this pet been a member of your family: 6 years

Background: Henry was a stray taken in with his kitten brothers and sisters.

Shelter Story: Me and my girlfriend at the time went to the VHS to adopt a cat. We went into the cat room and he instantly came up to us. She picked him up like a baby and we was all about it. He continued to follow us around the room. After playing with the other cats we couldn’t deny that he was too much of a ham to not get him.

Home Life: Henry lives with me, two other cats (Nancy and Phee), and my dog (Lucy). He loves to play fetch with his little stuffed mouse and, as you can see, likes to hop in whatever box has a bit of room in it. Whenever someone comes over Henry is the first to greet them. I think this is partly because he wants to run out the door. It’s funny because he darts out just so he can roll around on the concrete porch then come right back inside.
